The Coal River Group is committed to developing and preserving the recreational resources in the Coal River Watershed.
The Big, Little and Coal Rivers have served the local residents as a center for recreation activities since the first white settlers arrived in the region in the late 1700’s.

Swimming, fishing, and boating have always been a favorite pastime for those living in the area. The abundant beaches found along the meandering rivers have been and remain a major attraction for weekend getaways and casual swimmers.

The CRG has developed the first WV Water Trail on the Coal Rivers. The 88 mile water trail us called the Walhonde Water Trail. Bill Queen a Co-founder of the group worked along with Bill Currey for over 3 years preparing the maps and identifying the 17 public access points that make the rivers accessible.

The original raft was donated to the Coal River Group by the North American River Rafters Company. The raft was being sold as surplus when we requested a donation. The Company liked what the CRG was doing on the Coal Rivers and presented us with the raft. (2004) The raft has been used to promote the CRG in parades and public events. Many people who would not be able to float the Coal (disabilities etc.) have enjoyed trips on the trusty old raft.
The original Tour De Coal craft has been fully restored and is pictured during a trip down the Gauley. Tim Ligon the Coal River Group chief river guide has upgraded the craft and is using it to market the Coal River Walhonde Trail to other rafters. Great job Tim!
