The Big Coal River Branch

The Big Coal River Branch is a committee of the Coal River Group (called a branch to reflect the group's interest in rivers and streams). The Branch was formed in 2008 by Mary Browning of Racine, WV.

The Branch carries out the CRG's mission on the ground in the Big Coal region of Boone County. The Branch works within the communities along the Big Coal to identify local issues and opportunities related to the river and its streams. Through the Branch's action plan, the committee hosts two annual creek cleanups per year at Lick Creek and White Oak that routinely gather over one hundred volunteers each, in addition to the signature event: Kevin's Lazy River Adventure, a community paddle trip and picnic on the Big Coal every last Saturday of July.

A group of kayakers, led by Big Coal River Branch Chairman Mary A. Browning of Racine, makes its way down the Big Coal River near Peytona Saturday morning during the 2nd annual Kevin's Lazy River Adventure.
