The Coal River Group is looking for interns for the summer of 2017 to help operate the Coal River Canoe & Kayak Rental business.
Interns will be primarily tasked with day-to-day operations of the Coal River Group’s boat rental business. Responsibilities will include: managing and maintaining boats and equipment; shuttling rental boats and passengers to their put-in/take-out site; handling business transactions for boat rentals and gear purchases; providing safety orientations to boaters; and marketing of the rental program.
Interns will also engage in maintenance of the Coal River Water Trail. Tasks will include: creating an inventory of existing signage throughout the 100 miles of water trail, and working with volunteers to replace needed signs.
- All Coal River Group internships include a youth outreach component. For this position, interns will coordinate several “Kids Outdoor Days” events, which will give local kids the opportunity to kayak and canoe
- Based on the intern’s individual experience, side projects may include marketing, GIS/GPS mapping, water quality monitoring, and other projects
- As a final deliverable upon completion of the position, interns will prepare a report on entrepreneurship in outdoor recreation.
Details & Requirements:
This is a full-time, 10-week summer internship program that will take place at the CRG River Center in Tornado, WV. The intern schedule will include flexible hours and days, allowing the three interns to coordinate their work schedules and carpool from Huntington.
As this position requires handling boats, applicants for this position should be physically fit, capable of lifting 60lbs, and able to swim. First aid certifications are preferred.
Upon completing the internship, interns will be awarded a $1000 scholarship.

Kris Radford, President of the Coal River Group, has announced the election of Michelle Martin to the Board of Directors of the non-profit river restoration organization.
Michelle is Vice President in Accounting for City National Bank. She is a graduate of West Virginia University and is a native of Weston, West Virginia.
Radford says,”The addition of Michelle to our board is exciting for everyone. She will be able to provide valuable support for our mom-profit group’s operations and along with her sister, Melissa, will continue to increase the Coal River Group’s growing trash removal programs throughout the Coal River Watershed”
“Michelle and her sister, Melissa Jo Mansour, who is also employed by City National Bank, have worked very hard the past year helping as volunteers and cleaning up the Coal Rivers. Together they co-founded a unique volunteer group called “Trash your Kayak Coal River Cleanup Crew.” The group has worked throughout the three Coal Rivers conducting “Tire River Rescues” and removing bags of trash from the Coal Rivers. You can find their group on Facebook.”
“Michelle and Melissa have earned additional honors from the Coal River Group involving river travels,’ says Radford. “Together they managed to paddle all 88 miles of the Coal River Water Trail and earned the coveted Coal River Guide vest award. Only 12 paddlers have accomplished this task and won the vest in the past 12 years,” Radford added.
The Coal River Group is a 501c3 non-profit group that has worked for the past 14 years helping to restore the rivers and streams in the 840 miles of the Coal River Watershed. The Group was named Watershed of the Year in 2009 and 2011. The organization annually conducts many river clean ups, student water quality education programs and recreation based events. In June 2016, the Group hosted the 12th annual Tour De Coal event. Over 1,000 Kayak paddlers participated in the 12 mile community float trip.
