CRG Science & Education Center
The Coal River Group Science & Education Center is located in Meadowood Park in the town of Tornado, West Virginia. The Center is housed in a log cabin overlooking Upper Falls on Coal River.
Completed in 2010, the CRG Science & Education Center, referred to as the "River Center," serves as the Coal River Group's conference meeting hall, classroom, and main office space. The log cabin was generously donated by Appalachian Log Structures, and all labor was performed by hardworking volunteers from around the community.
CRG Renewable Energy Center
From the outset, the cabin at the CRG Science & Education Center was designed to be powered by renewable energy. Thanks to generous support from the West Virginia Legislature, the CRG was able to install a state-of-the-art renewable energy system, powered by a Xantrex XM power management center. The system includes 8 solar panels and a wind turbine, which are currently supplying power to the Center's net meter. Upcoming additions to the system will include a hydropower unit that will be placed in the falls below the cabin and a soon-to-be-installed geothermal unit.
The CRG's Renewable Energy Project was built to be a demonstration site for the community. Visitors are welcome to come in, see how the system runs, and evaluate what options are feasible for their own use.
