Meadowood Park

Located in Tornado, WV, Meadowood Park is the official home of the Coal River Group. Our CRG Science & Education Center is located within the county park.

Meadowood Park is located on 600 acres along Coal River at Upper Falls. The park has two soccer fields, picnic shelters, a playground, and a lake with a handicapped access fishing pier, in addition to two public access boat launch sites on the Coal River Water Trail.

The park has long been a gathering place for soccer games, picnics, and cross country running events, but the advent of the Coal River Group has made Meadowood a center for paddlers and fishermen. The park boasts a fishing pond, Pettigrew Lake, that was built in the 1950's when the park was still a farm owned by the Pettigrew family. Today the lake features a handicap-accessible fishing pier and a covered picnic area for visitors.

Thanks to CRG member Lois Ludwig and a visiting AmeriCorps NCCC team, there are trails builts around the lake for hiking and new fishing access points to the water.

The renovations to Pettigrew Lake took place in 2011. Over the years the 250-foot dam backing up the water had failed and the lake had gone dry. The Coal River Group gathered support to fix the dam and asked for help from professional engineers and contractors. As a result, Terradon Engineering and Massey Services repaired the lake and made substantial improvements to the park. The WVDEP monitored the construction and ensured the project's success.

The Coal River Group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the protecting, preserving, and promoting the Coal River watershed.
