TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Objective: To create a plan for the development of Tourism for the Great Coal River area. The plan will utilize the specific actions and programs developed by the Groups committees as the basis for developing tourism growth in the area.

Definition of Tourism: Those who travel from place to place to experience new sites, recreational opportunities and to learn about different cultures.

Plan perimeters:

The plan is designed to establish a base line for:

  1. The state of Tourism in the area.
  2. The economic impact of existing tourism activities
  3. The present sites and facilities available to support tourism
  4. The available work force and training for employees who could be employed in the Industry.

The committee’s plan will explore and recommend actions and projects that will enhance Tourism for the area.

The Group has two primary areas of interest that have action committees established to generate specific projects and recommendations.

  1. History
  2. Recreation

These two committees are expected to produce a variety of projects which, if implemented could draw tourist to the area.

A Development and Preservation committee has been established to bring together all of the committees activities in a master plan and make recommendations to lead the group toward success in accomplishing its various goals.

The Tourism Committee is charged with the responsibility of promoting the development of these projects and to market these projects to the ultimate users.

The Tourism committee is likewise charged with the responsibility of addressing public issues and to begin the process of enhancing the overall image of the Great Coal River.

Phase 1.

The committee will research and develop data to provide a base line of information on the "State of Tourism in the Coal River Area".

  1. The written report will provide both economic and facilities information on the area as it exists at the present time. The geographic region to be addressed by the report will include an area somewhat larger than the area originally defined by the Groups Mission statement. The objective is to include the areas presently being impacted by the Growth along Corridor G and the Hatfield and McCoy trail project.
  2. The report will address the availability of existing Tourist facilities and Tourist assets and quantify the present conditions as they relate to Tourism Development.
  3. The report will address employment related to the existing tourism business and report on available labor and training needs.

The report will address the present image of the river and area in Public Relations terms.

Summary:

The concept for moving forward to develop the Tourism activity in the CRG is simple. We plan to research the state of Tourism as it is presently.

The History and Recreation committee will present specific projects to improve and develop tourism.

The Tourism Committee will help to analyze these projects in terms of their potential impact on growing tourism in the area and make recommendations for prioritizing such plans based on economic and quality of life payoffs.

The Tourism Committee will develop a master plan for tourism development based on the programs and projects.

The committee will continually address Public Relations issues and action plans for dealing with these situations will be ongoing
